“Tregroes Waffles sells pleasure, not food. We want our business to be good for humans and good for the earth. If we can make our waffles in a way that serves our community and the world we are living in, then that has to be good for you, for us and for everybody.”
Kees Huysmans, Managing Director
Climate change is caused by greenhouse gases which are produced by human activities. The most common greenhouse gas is Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and in 2010, businesses were responsible for 15% of UK greenhouse gas emissions. As a small business, we want to make sure our contribution to causing climate change is as small as possible.
We have measured our carbon footprint and found that for every waffle we produce, we emit 18g of CO2. Most of this comes from the energy used in our bakery, but some of it is produced by the fuel used to transport our waffles. A small amount of the emissions are due to the water used and waste produced in the manufacturing process.
We want to make sure our impact on the environment is minimised as much as possible and are doing this by:
Reducing the number of journeys needed to deliver our ingredients by making sure they are delivered in bulk as far as possible
Reducing the amount of lighting needed in the factory by fitting windows
Ensuring that all energy using equipment is switched off when out of use
Attempting to ensure that our packaging is sourced from recycled materials
Improving the energy efficiency of our baking oven
We are always looking at ways in which we can reduce our energy use and make our processes more efficient. To make sure that we are on the right track we will continue measuring and reporting our CO2 emissions. Together we can make the world a better place.
